The Incredible Beauty of Plants Magnified

Fern Frond at 10x Magnification, Polypodium vulgare 10x

This image gallery brings to focus the splendid vascular systems of common plants, and showcases the beauty that resides at all levels of the natural world. See the entire gallery.

These plant sections were meticulously sectioned by Eckhard Völcker using a hand cylinder microtome, and then stained using brilliant dyes such as acridine red, acriflavine and astra blue.

As soon as I saw these images I contacted Mr. Völcker and asked for permission to show them here on LabGrab.com He was nice enough to give us permission, and give some background. He says, "I do this just as a hobby. I love nature and I found it amazing what beauty is hidden inside of plants. I use very colorful stains with fluorescent colors. The stains are individually adapted to the botanical material. Sometimes I must cut over 50 sections before I have found the right approach to the specific material."

Original?

This are very beautiful colourful pictures. I wonder how does it look like without adding any colours. Just shades of green? Would be nice to see and compare..
Thank you, Lucie

The image is very useful

The image is very useful for the biology student who studies about plants.I wonder how does it look like without adding any colors.

Nature

Nature’s default mode is beauty. Consider the tiniest grains of pollen, works of architecture as intricate and elegant as to defy belief. Humans have been able to appreciate such wonders only after inventing the electronic microscope, which has enabled scientists to fully study the elaborate and dynamic reproductive strategies of plants, but it takes an artist to fully appreciate their aesthetics.
