Laser-induced gamma waves offer insight into brain functions

Researchers at MIT have recently discovered a method for inducing gamma waves by direct stimulation with laser light. Not to be confused with gamma rays, the high-energy electrons linked to cancer, radioactive decay, and the Incredible Hulk, gamma oscillations are the high frequency brain waves long associated with consciousness itself. By using a special light-sensitizing protein in combination with high frequency laser pulses, the researchers were able to induce gamma waves in specific areas of the brain; lower frequencies and stimulation of other areas did not result in gamma waves. This technique could prove invaluable for further research into treatment for various brain disorders.
